The Multipass

Design Intent

The Multipass is a design we derived from working within the wire and cable industry and is a staple of most non-vulcanized jacketing lines. Typically seen just down stream of the extruder, the Multipass is a critical feature for extracting the appropriate mechanical properties for your jacket.  Additionally, it allows the process to more easily handle the material without damaging the coating.

The heart of the system is a temperature control circuit, typically provided by the customer, which circulates the waste water from the system through a heat exchanger and sends it back to the unit. The purpose of the Multipass is to receive the newly coated wire and route it through a series of sheaves internal to the machine. As the wire is wrapped through the sheave circuit, cold water is being routed to a misting header and is gently coating the wire. As the misting spray fills the Multipass, the temperature of the unit begins to decrease and heat is encouraged to flow from the now hot wire to the atmosphere at a faster rate. As the mist begins to build up and collect, it slowly makes its way down to the bottom of the unit where it is allowed to drain out and return to process for cooling.

Design Variations

The Multipass has a base design concept but can be modified to meet any task. Whether you have spatial restrictions, increased heat demand, or require different methods of actuation, we can entertain any configuration alteration you require. Primary alterations that are easily available include:

  • Overall length
  • Trough enclusion
  • Pneumatic or electric actuation
  • Cross section shape alteration
